A Perfect 10

Yesterday, my child sailed into her 10th month of life and I am here today still feeling overwhelmed by how incredibly fast time is moving! I feel like I just wrote her 9 month update and I am excited and a little bit sad that there are only 2 months left of this first year.

My amazing daughter is growing so much every single day and soon, she'll be walking. She's already cruising around all of the furniture and she's tried to take a few steps on her own. I *think* I am ready for this next part of the journey! It's a good thing I've been working out because I'm going to need to be in top shape to keep up with this kid! She's into EVERYTHING and I had hoped that baby proofing would be optional but she has quickly proven that it certainly is not with this kid. Olivia Anne is one energetic, silly, lovable, and mischievous little girl!

Earlier this week, Mike and I were eating dinner as Oli was crawling all around us in the kitchen when I had a moment of "Aha, I am officially getting the hang of this parenting gig!" As we were eating, The Boss Lady started crawling underneath the kitchen table. Our table is this ornate, metal piece with a glass top and she loves to use it as a jungle gym. She stood up in the center of it and got her head stuck and started being VERY dramatic about it. She was crying and Mike and I just laughed. I know that may sound mean to those of you without kids but there are times as a parent that you just know when your kid is being a total drama queen. And my kid was being the Queen of Drama that night.

It just hit me that night that we are just so comfortable as parents these days. We know our kid well enough to know when to jump up and hold her in our arms or when to just laugh and let her figure things out on her own. Her crying used to freak me out. I mean, I never knew what any of her cries meant and I thought I had to fix everything for her. Now I know that I need to let her discover the world a little without jumping up and scooping her up every single time she fusses.

I am sitting here watching Olivia play as I type this. Occasionally, I have to stop and say "No, ma'am!" when she starts to get into something she shouldn't. And I'm in complete awe of this little person who is crawling around my living room like a mini-Godzilla. I seriously cannot believe 10 months have passed and it is incredible how much my child has changed.

Even more incredible is how we continue to love her more every single day. 10 months ago, I wouldn't have even believed it was possible to have this much love in my heart without it exploding.

Happy 10 month birthday to the crawling, into-everything, funny, loud, adorable, best-hug-giving, almost-3-toothed Boss Lady!

Some kids snuggle with a teddy bear. Mine snuggles with her remote control!

The Drama Queen at her best!

To my husband on his FIRST Father's Day...

Dear Mike,

I always knew you'd be a great dad but seeing you in action has been incredible. Right now, I'm listening to you read nursery rhymes to our daughter and I am just struck once more by how blessed I am to have you as the father of our child.

From those first hours in the hospital when you refused to let the nurse change Oli's diaper because you wanted to learn how to do it yourself to the nights when she wakes up and you get up before I am even fully awake, you have shown how much you love Olivia and what a great daddy you truly are.

I love the look in your eyes when you walk in the front door and see our sweet girl. I love how she smiles and her eyes light up when she hears your voice. I love the sound of your voice when you talk to her, how you are so silly with her. I love that there is nothing you aren't willing to do to help me out around the house or with Olivia. You are kind, loving, funny, caring, and giving at all times.

It takes a special man to be a daddy to a little girl and our little girl pretty much won the daddy lottery.

I have seen our love change, grow, and evolve into something more complete since The Boss Lady made her way into our lives. You have always been a wonderful husband and now I have seen you prove that even more. You keep me balanced, sane, laughing, and inspired through this whole crazy journey. Because of you, I am driven to be a better wife, woman, and mom. I have fallen in love with you in a whole new way.

You always tell me that I am a great mom. If I am a great mom, it is because I am inspired by you. I am inspired by watching your patience when things get crazy and your unconditional love when things are not always easy.

I have warned you before that raising a teenage girl is going to be one insane ride. I know because I WAS a teenage girl. Teenage girls are a...special breed. But I have no doubt that you will thrive during that part of this journey too. I have no doubt that your love for our daughter will remain strong and steady. Your love will be the standard she holds every other man to. Your love will be that reminder to her that she does not have to accept anything less than absolute love, honesty, respect, and care.

Thank you for being a wonderful dad to our sweet girl and for being an awe-inspiring partner to me. Thank you for all you do for our family. For giving of yourself everyday to make our life happy, healthy, and whole. Olivia and I are so blessed to have you.

I know our sweet girl would tell you she loves you if she could. I see the love for you in her eyes every day. And though she often clings to me or reaches for me when she is tired or upset, it is your presence that calms her at night. It is the smile on your face that causes the one on hers at the end of the day. It is your funny voices and antics that make her laugh during bathtime.

We are often told what a wonderful and happy child we have. I believe this is because of all of the love and care she receives from you, from me, and from us as a couple.

Thank you for embarking on this incredible journey with me. I absolutely could not do this without you. I love you more than all of the stars in the sky.

Happy Happy Father's Day,

Steph

Good Morning Campers!!!

When I was a kid, my sister, Michelle, and I would spend the summers with our dad in Louisiana and while he was at work during the day, our Aunt Jacki would take care of us and our cousins. One of our annual summer activities was to go to Ft. Pickens, FL and go camping. We would load up her 2 door Ford Festiva (Google a picture of this so you can see how small the car is!) with camping gear, food for about a week, 5 kids and 1 adult, and we would make the 4-5 hour trek to the beach.

Once there, we would set up our little campsite and spend the week touring the old forts, playing in the sand, riding bikes around the campsite, and playing cards or chess at night before we went to bed. It didn't matter how many times we'd been on the fort tours before, we still went. In fact, between the 5 of us, we could probably give those tours ourselves! We were never bored and spent sun up to sun down soaking up every ray of sunshine (yeah, we didn't know much about sun protection back then...). We made friends with other campers and truly explored and experienced everything Ft. Pickens had to offer us. For nearly a solid week, we didn't watch tv, play video games, or talk on the phone to our friends. We just had each other. And it was perfect. Even then, as small children, we had a sense that sometimes you just need to step away from it all and really live in the amazing world God built for us.

I remember sitting up at night with my cousins playing spades. I remember splashing in the Gulf and learning all about sea turtles and sand dunes. I remember watching the racoons pick their way through our campsite at night, looking for any food that had been left out. We cooked our meals together, played together, and slept in one big, family sized tent. These trips are my favorite memory as a child. I'll bet if you asked my sister and cousins, they'd tell you the same.

A few months ago, Michelle mentioned going camping with her husband's family. I got so excited! Camping!!!! All of my memories as a kid came flooding back and I think my sister could tell how fun this sounded to me and invited Mike, Oli, and me to come along. It had been years since I had been camping. Mike and I went for a night a few years ago on a river float trip but that was it. This would be our first "family vacation."

I have to admit that as the time drew near and we began making preparations for the trip, I started to get a little nervous. Camping??? What was I thinking??? It's June for crying out loud. In Texas. And we have a 9 month old! I have no idea how to prepare for a camping trip. I didn't know what groceries to buy or what to bring. How did Aunt Jacki do it???

Michelle and I split the grocery list and talked about a few things that we knew we'd need. And of course, we used this as an excuse to pack things we don't normally eat. Like bologna, and Oreos, and huge chocolate muffins (were we headed to Fat Camp perhaps??) Luckily, we would be sleeping in shelters so we wouldn't need a tent, just air mattresses and bedding. Mike and I got the pack n' play ready, threw some t-shirts, shorts, and bathing suits in a bag, grabbed enough diapers for a daycare center, and we were ready to go.

As we loaded up my bro-in-law's big SUV, I started to get really excited. I imagined the campfire, swimming in the lake, and those awesome mornings where you wake up to natural sunlight and get to enjoy the cool morning air. The car was packed to the roof and we were off! As we drove away, helping Michael navigate traffic since he couldn't see out of the back window, we wondered, "How did Aunt Jacki do it??" Seriously, did you Google a picture of the Ford Festiva?? Here we were in this huge SUV and we barely made everything fit. Yet, somehow, she managed to get 5 kids, herself, all of our luggage, camping gear, and food for a week inside. I am convinced, yet again, that the good ole Ford Festiva was some kind of magical clown car.

We arrived at the campsite late on Friday, set up our new home for the next 3 days, and cracked open the beer. That night we could see every star in the sky and hear the cicadas chirping all around us. I haven't heard that sound in a long time and it sounded like music to me. The next morning, we were woken by the sun, that beautiful morning sunrise that I so often miss because I'm busy getting ready for work or trying to catch up on sleep on the weekends.

For 3 days we floated in the lake, played cards (and some drinking games--a perk to no longer being 10 years old), ate yummy camp food (hot dogs, burgers, bologna sandwiches, Oreos, etc.), fished, and just hung out together. We had the most random and wonderful conversations which is exactly what happens when you are without cable tv or computers. Mike, Oli, and I got to know Michael's family better and they treated us like family. I was nervous about Oli going camping for the first time. I just wasn't sure how she'd handle the heat but she camped like a pro! My dad would be so proud!

Major, major thanks goes out to Michael's aunt Becky & uncle Kevin for all they did to make this camping trip awesome! Between them and their long-time neighbors, Gary & Laura, we were prepared for everything. They had breakfast and dinners planned. They had camping stoves, dishes, coolers full of drinks, and floats for the lake. They thought of everything! They treated us like we were one of their own and it was so nice to be included with their wonderful families.

Of course, like any Milligan outing these days, we did have a few minor calamities. The first night, our air mattress sprung a leak so Mike and I slept on the concrete. After a night of being the Flintstones, Mike headed to the local Walmart to get a new one. We were ready to rough it, but not that much! The second day, something weird happened with the window shades and the sink in our shelter and somehow the faucet ended up being turned on by the window shade and the sink wasn't draining and our shelter got flooded. Luckily nothing got ruined and it was early enough in the day that everything had time to dry out before that night. There were a few scorpion sighting (how did I forget how many bugs there are when you are camping???), sunburns galore (except for Team Milligan because we are so white that I think the sun actually just bounces off of us at this point), and did I mention it was June?? For those of you not from around these parts, that means it was HOT. HOT. HOT.

And though we were camping, of course everyone still had their i-phone handy to check sports scores and Facebook. Since Sunday night was game 6 of the NBA Championship and our beloved Mavs were just 1 game away from winning it, the guys were determined to watch that game. They managed to get a 13 inch tv to our campsite so we could watch the game! There we sat in our camping chairs, the lake in front of us, the woods behind, and the NBA Championship final game playing. It was pretty funny to see a bunch of "campers" crowded around a television.

During the hottest parts of the day, suddenly everyone needed to go get things from the "store." Now I have no idea what they were selling at the stores around that lake, but everyone in our group needed to go. I'm pretty sure this was their way of beating the heat. Cheaters! ;) My dreams of a campfire were not realized since there was a burn ban because of the lack of rain but I didn't mind so much since it was so hot. Did I mention it was hot??

The night before we left, Michelle and I laid next to each other on our adjoining air mattresses, Mike, Michael, and Oli snoozing beside us, and talked for a long time. My sister and I didn't always get along when we were kids. In fact, we fought A LOT. But I remember all of the evenings we laid beside each other on my dad's pull out couch, in our tent in Ft. Pickens, or on pallets on the floor at my grandparents. No matter what we had fought about that day, we were there with each other and for each other at the end of it. Our conversations that night were less about boys and clothes and more about mother- and womanhood, but it still felt like being a kid again. As adults, we don't have slumber parties that often, and we don't share a sleeping space. But for 3 nights this weekend, we did and it was awesome.

As we packed up the next day, I felt a little sad that our trip had come to an end. I was thrilled to be getting back to the air conditioner but bummed that this care-free weekend was over.

On our way back home, Mike and I talked about how much fun we had and how we would do it again next year if we are invited back (hint, hint!). We talked about how nice it was to get away from everything for a while and just have some fun just hanging out.

This is how I want Olivia to grow up. I want her to know what it's like to go camping, to fish in the lake, to hang out at night with her cousins playing cards or dominoes, to lay next to her sister at night, looking at every star in the sky, talking about boys and clothes.

I feel like we have a tendency to get away from the simpler things in life that bring us so much joy. Mine and Mike's vacations have been pretty elaborate in the past. I'm not saying camping is an easy vacation. It's not. But it's definitely simpler. There are no jacuzzi tubs, wait staff bringing pina coladas pool side, or comfy king sized beds. But there are stars, the sounds of cicadas at night, watching deer as you eat your grilled hot dog, the soft "plonk" sound a lure makes as it hits the water, and just being with each other without a whole bunch of distractions.

When you are camping, you have to really pull together and interact. You have to team up to cook the meals, wash the dishes, set up the campsite, and entertain each other. It's a way to just come together as a family and really enjoy each other. Our lives are so busy and often we are all traveling in different directions. When you are at a campsite though, the busy-ness just sort of stops and you get to breathe a little for a little while.

We are definitely saving for a vacation at a beach resort, but I hope, as we continue Team Milligan family vacations, we get to equally enjoy all of the luxuries of a resort as well as the beauty of a campsite.

Camping is so relaxing!

Cutest camper ever!

What to do when it's too hot to play?? Nap, of course!

Smooches from Olivia!

Last night at dinner, Mike was blowing kisses to Olivia and she started imitating the kissing noise back to him! So cute!!!

Baby Crap

No, not poop. Though I could write quite a bit on that since Olivia just took her first one in the tub this evening. Go figure it happened on a night that Mike wasn't home and we are all out of beer.

What I mean by "Baby Crap" is the crap you start buying from the Seventh Circle of Hell (a.k.a. Babies R Us) the minute you find out you are pregnant. Crap, as in the stuff that slowly starts taking over your home until one day you look up and realize you live in Pee Wee's Playhouse.

Well, no more crap folks!! If you've already had a baby, this post probably won't do you much good since, like me, you already stocked up on all of the baby crap. BUT, if you are pregnant or think a little munchkin might be in your future, then this post is going to save you tons of cash!

Before I ever even thought of creating a Miniature Milligan, I was so intimidated by Babies R Us. If I needed to get a gift for a shower, I would walk into the store, head down, and make a bee line for the registry podium. I'd print out the registry, scroll down the list until I saw an item that matched my budget, ask a sales lady to lead me right to it, and check out of there as soon as I could. I spent 10 minutes in there, tops.

Then I got knocked up and suddenly, Babies R Us sounded like Baby Mecca. Now, I, Stephanie Milligan would get to take one of those nifty price guns and register for all of the cutesy, pink & floral baby crap I had purchased for friends so many, many times. I was thrilled!

I felt much the same way during Wedding Mania at Bed, Bath, & Beyond (The Sixth Circle of Hell). Well, at least I felt that way until about my 85th return there when I started to realize that much of the gimmicky crap they sold there was...well...gimmicky crap. An egg mcmuffin maker??? Hmmmm...let me think on that...Purchase all of the ingredients for an egg mcmuffin, drag out the cumbersome machine, clean said machine, then enjoy the disaster that is supposed to be my very own homemade egg mcmuffin?? OR, drive through McDonald's, pay $1 for the real deal, and enjoy the rest of my morning? Now, I'm no neurosurgeon but I think the answer to that dilemma is pretty obvious.

But, I digress. It appears, I've not really gotten over my bitterness at the disappointments from all of our Wedding Crap. By the way, does anyone want to buy an egg mcmuffin maker??

Okay, so anyway, there I was, growing my little Mini and dragging Mike to Babies R Us one find Saturday morning. Seriously, I woke up that morning feeling like it was Christmas. We were going to have our very own BABY REGISTRY!!!

When we got there, they gave us this great little welcome packet with coupons and checklists galore (I'm total Type A so I'm a checklist lover). Then they gave us that nifty little price gun and off we went.

First stop: Baby Bottles. And there we stood, staring up at the 800 foot wall of bottles. There were about 567 brands and about 872 versions of bottles that each brand made. We looked at each other, we looked back at the bottles, we looked at each other, we looked around the huge store and realized that we still had a LONG way to go before making it to the end. "We'll just come back to bottles later," I said.

We moved on only to find that every freakin' section of Babies R Us is like this! There are so many options and so many things to buy! We were overwhelmed and getting frustrated.

Because we were pros and we learned quite a bit from the Wedding Crap, we were pretty easily able to spot the Baby Crap. A pacifier purse?? For real?!?!? Oh, and let's not forget the cute diaper wipes case to match. Never mind that the diaper wipe manufacturers, in all their genius, made wipes cases that are already made to fit in a diaper bag. Oh, and a cute little changing pad to go with all of that. With its own little case. Newsflash folks: when your kid creates a poo/pee paste on the changing pad, it won't matter how cute it is. So, then you need a case/bag to put all of those bags in! Who thought of this crap???

And a wipes warmer??? There are a lot of things I can blame on my parents' questionable parenting practices, but I'm quite certain none of my present day issues are a result of having a cold tushie as I got my diaper changed. Okay, I know some of you reading this are big believers in the wipes warmer and I have heard the arguments and I still disagree. One person tried to tell me that it's great because if your kid needs a diaper change in the middle of the night, you won't shock her with a cold wipe. Well, let me just inform you that if my kid is being changed in the middle of the night, it's because she woke up screaming because she didn't want to hang out in her own poop anymore. So, she's pretty much already shocked. And the way I see it, that cold wipe is kinda like my revenge for her waking me up at 3:36 in the morning. So, there.

Seriously, this list of ridiculous baby crap could go on for days. Most of it, I learned because I got suckered in. I just got so excited by all of that cute baby stuff that promised to make my life as a new mom so much easier that I just ate it all up.

It doesn't end with the baby stage though. Next come the toys. There are about a million toys to buy your kid and they all promise to turn your child into the next Nobel Prize winner. They are all geared for learning and development and they look just so exciting! So you buy all of these contraptions and you use them for all of 5 seconds before your kid outgrows them or grows bored of them, then up in the attic they go to be donated or saved for the next munchkin.

At this point in the game, after Wedding Crap and Baby Crap, Mike and I were fully prepared for Baby Toy Crap. We aren't getting suckered in this time. We've found the key to our child's happiness while playing and we aren't breaking the bank to do it. And lucky you that I'm here to share all of my 9 months of wisdom.

Below, you'll find pictures of the latest and greatest in baby toys. It's time to get excited folks because you won't have to go anywhere near Babies R Us or the Eight Circle of Hell (Toys R Us)! It's likely you have most of these items all of over your home!

The Door Stoppers: This nifty gadget will provide at least 30 minutes of entertainment. I know, if you don't have kids, 30 minutes doesn't sound like a long time. But, trust me. If your kid can stay entertained for 30 solid minutes, you'll consider it a friggin' miracle. Our sweet girl plops herself down in front of one of these things and just flicks it to her hearts delight. Eventually though, she does manage to get one off so you have to watch for that. But then it sorts of transforms into a great chew toy, er, teething thing.

Tupperware: The makers of this stuff should win an award for Multi Purpose Product of a Lifetime. I mean, what haven't you used Tupperware for??? If the Boss Lady needs some entertainment while we are making dinner, we throw some of this on the kitchen floor and she has a ball. She bangs them together, bangs them on the floor, or just pushes it around. After dinner, it's already out for us to package up the leftovers! Yeah right, like there are ever any leftovers in this house.

The Remote Control: There are 2 tricks to this one. The first is that you have to take the batteries out. This is for safety and so you aren't in the middle of your favorite tv program only to have the screen go black, look over, and see that your sweet angel has pushed a button you didn't even know existed. Then you spend the next half hour trying to figure out how to fix the tv. The second one is that you then have to act like it is so important that the angel baby doesn't touch that remote. We put this one up on the coffee table and say (very loudly), "Olivia, PLEASE don't touch this remote. It's a VERY important remote!" She then makes a beeline for that remote and hauls it all over the living room banging it on all surfaces.

Keys: Not those fake baby keys either. She knows the difference. They have to be real keys. They are great as a noise maker and a teething device. Just be careful to keep an eye on the amount of slobber on your frequent shopper cards. They start to disintegrate after a while.

The Toilet Paper Roll: Obsession doesn't even come close to explaining Olivia's love for this device. If she is anywhere near the bathroom, she jets in, crawls straight over, stands up, and with one smooth flick of the wrist, toilet paper is all over the bathroom. Then she sits down and starts munching away. Seriously, if this stuff was edible, my life as a parent would be AMAZING. Instead, I usually end up spending the next 5 minutes re-rolling the toilet paper then fishing pieces of it out of her mouth. So, if you are at our house and our toilet paper looks a little chewed on or wet, now you know. Get over it or drip dry.

The Cell Phone: Again, not a fake one. It has to be the real deal. She loves the pretty blue light and the way it feels on her gums apparently. A word to the wise on this one: Beware the slobber. It appears that Blackberry didn't anticipate baby slobber so now a few of my keys no longer work. So if you are getting texts messages from me and my texts are missing the letters "a" and "w" you now know why.

Living Room Furniture: Or anything else you can make noise on. As seen in this video, it doesn't take much to keep our Sweet Pea entertained. Bottom line: she just likes to spend time with us, no matter what the toy or activity is. This drum session went on for about 30 minutes before she got bored and we moved on to something else. At any rate, this was fun for all of us!

So, I hope I've saved you a little bit of money and a trip or two to the Seventh Circle of Hell. The thing is, all of the toys and contraptions out there promise to make your life easier but parenting takes a lot of energy and a lot of interaction with your kid. And though I'd love it if there was a toy or video I could sit her in front of to enjoy a nice, long shower or nap or if there was some baby contraption that would have helped make life easier, there just isn't that perfect thing. Our sweet girl just loves interacting with us. We love it too and are just trying to enjoy the time we have to play with her--before she gets wise and realizes we are a bunch of cheap asses who have refused to spend money at Toys R Us. Good thing we have a lot of those Door Stoppers to keep her happy in the meantime!

Resolution Update: Week 21 The Big Finale

Weight: 135!!!!! I seriously thought I was going to have to end these updates without having met my goal! I won't be weighing myself again for the next couple of days though because after this holiday weekend, there's no telling what the scale will read!

FINAL thoughts/reflections: This weekend, we officially broke in my sister & bro-in-law's pool and for the first time in my entire life, I put on my bikini without a single worry as to how I look. The entire day, I didn't worry about my belly sticking out or positioning myself just right so I could hide my fat rolls. The funny thing about this is that my belly and thighs are covered in stretch marks and I didn't think about that the whole day! I just enjoyed being healthy and feeling good about myself. My body is NOT PERFECT and I am totally okay with that. My thighs still touch and my belly is still soft and I will probably never look like a super model. But I am healthy and happy and comfortable in my own skin for the first time in my adult life.

As promised, my bikini finale pic is below! I think I was more self conscious about how white I am! Ha! Mike and a friend of mine made the suggestion that maybe a spray tan was in order. I seriously considered it but decided against it because that's just not me. I'm super glow-in-the-dark white and I wear SPF 100 to keep it that way! So, fair warning to you: you may need sunglasses to see through the glare from my legs! ;)

Also, before I officially end my Resolution Update posts, I wanted to leave everyone with a few tips/tricks since a lot of people ask what I'm doing differently. Here are just a few of my big ones:

1. I ALWAYS have a water bottle with me. I've found that a lot of the times I feel hungry, I'm actually just dehydrated. And if I have water and am well hydrated, I'm less tempted to fill up on the empty calories that are in sodas or juice. Water is just really good for you. Period.

2. I read labels. Our grocery store excursions take a little longer because I read every label before I buy. I've been shocked to find that foods that claim to be low in sugar or fat aren't really much better than their "regular" counterparts. Not to mention that the low sugar or low fat options are usually stocked with "other" ingredients that make them edible. Just because it's low sugar or fat doesn't make it good for you. Eating low fat ice cream every single day isn't healthy.

3. I work out 5 (or more) days a week. I know this sounds daunting but I really feel like that has been a key piece of this. Not only do my workouts help with calorie burn, they also help me mentally feel good about myself and then I'm motivated to keep making good decisions. My doctor asked me how often I was working out when she saw me and I told her this and she said she has patients all of the time who are trying to lose weight and are working out 3 days a week. She said she really believes that working out 4 or more days a week really makes a difference.

4. I was patient. I had GREAT results but this has taken time and patience. I didn't lose 10 pounds in one week, ever. I had to keep at it, day after day, week after week. This will continue to be a day-to-day process for the rest of my life. Being healthy is a life long journey, not a sprint.

5. I gave myself a little grace. Even though I know that working out 5 days a week is best and eating healthy every day is the way to staying healthy, there were days that I couldn't or just didn't. I didn't let that de-rail me though. I just recognized that there are going to be "bad" days and that I can start over immediately. I used to say things like "Oh, well, I ate a cookie today (Tuesday), so I guess I'll just start being healthy next week." WHAT?!?! That's just silly. Now, if I eat a cookie on Tuesday, I re-start ON TUESDAY. There's no reason I can't regroup immediately.

Okay, so that's that! And this is the end! Or at least the end of this series of posts. And here is the New Me!

9 months today!

At 18 pounds, 6 oz and 28 & 1/4 inches, Olivia Anne is growing fast! And no wonder, with all of the toilet paper and Sports Illustrated she's been eating lately! Her love for paper products perplexes us but life with our Sweet Pea is never dull and we are loving it! In celebration of our sweet girl's 9 month birthday, here are 9 things (though there are MANY more!) I love about The Boss Lady:

1. Her laugh. Both of them, actually. She has her real laugh, the sweet little giggle that gives her hiccups. This laugh sounds like music and she sometimes giggles so hard, especially if she's being tickled, that she can hardly breathe. Then she has this other laugh. It's more of her "I'm up to something and trying to distract you with my cuteness" laugh. Luckily, I get to hear the sound of her laughter many times a day. Our kiddo is a silly girl and loves to laugh!

2. Her sweet baby babble. My kid is a chatterbox! Imagine that...Ha! She talks a lot and I think she's often telling me or Mike how it is! I'm a little nervous to hear what she has to say when she learns a few words! She usually talks all the way to daycare and on the way home and often when I'm trying to put her to bed and she's ready to play. She'll look up at me as I'm rocking her, point her finger at my face or poke me in the mouth, and tell me very seriously "Da da, ba ba, eeehhhh!" I think that means, "Suck it, mom, I am NOT tired!"

3. Our new bedtime routine. Our new routine is to give her a bath, let her play until she's trying to climb out, get her in her pj's, and then she and I will lay down on the living room floor and watch tv while she nurses. She usually fall asleep next to me, then I fall asleep, then we just sleep there together for a little while until Mike wakes me to go to bed. Then he carries her into her bed. I just love cuddling up with her every night and feeling her sweet breath on my skin, smelling her baby shampoo scented hair, and the feel of her tiny body curled against me. It's the best part of my day.

4. Her smile. She's got these 2 little bottom teeth and that's it and they make her grin that much cuter! Whenever she sees Mike or me, her whole little face lights up and we get this big 2-teeth grin that could melt your heart. Her little eyes just light up and she has this amazing dimple in her left cheek. I will do anything to see that kiddo smile!

5. The way she eats. I cannot explain why this is so fascinating to me. I could watch this kid eat all day long. We've pretty much given up on the pureed baby food so we just give her a little of what we are eating. We usually just cut it up into bite sized pieces and put it on her tray. She picks up each piece individually, slowly guides it toward her mouth, then she crams the food and her fist into her mouth in one not-so-swift move. About 80% of the time, the food makes it in her mouth. The other 20% of the time, we find it in her chair, on the floor, and, on more than one occasion, in her diaper when we get her ready for her bath. It's just so fun to watch her "operate" her own hands. Seriously, she stares at them in total concentration like she is operating a delicate crane. It is so neat to watch her discovering her own abilities.

6. The way she meets me at the door. Whenever I come in, Mike will say "Who is that??" Olivia will race toward the door to meet me! She does this at daycare too. When I go to pick her up, I peek over the door and say, "Hey boog!" She looks up and starts crawling like a mad-woman! It's so incredible to see that tiny person crawling toward me like we haven't seen each other in years. She gives me a huge grin and she sort of grunts and pants as she books it toward me!

7. The way she giggles when I tell her no. I think this says something about whether or not I'll be the disciplinarian around here! Seriously, whenever I tell her "No, Olivia Anne!" she looks at me, gives me a little giggle, then goes right back to what she's not supposed to be doing. Then I start laughing and have to look away as I pry her off of whatever she's getting into.

8. Her determination. When Olivia sets her mind to something, she does it! And she does it usually with her tongue clamped between her gums, sticking out just a little bit. That sounds weird but it's super cute. Now that she can pull up, she is determined that everything that is up, must come down. So if there is something on the coffee table, it doesn't stay there long. If she decides that is going to unroll the toilet paper, there is nothing that can stop her! When she is done eating and no longer wants me to help her, she will push my hand away with authority! She definitely has a mind of her own.

9.  She's a socialite. This kid has never met a stranger and she LOVES being around other babies. I love that she is so social and we have really had a blast having her around our friends and their kiddos. She's already had fun at 2 friends' birthday parties and she's kind of a celebrity at church. Most of the time, we don't really get to see her when we are out and about with her! The gym daycare girls get so excited when they see her and she's always flirting with people at the grocery store. I'm pretty sure she's more popular than we are at this point!

A couple of months ago, a friend told me that her favorite baby phase is this 9 month stage. I have to agree with her. This is pretty amazing. Olivia is growing and learning so fast and it is incredible to see her exploring her world. I can't wait to see what she learns in the next month!

In her pj's but NOT ready for bed
